About Cappadocia

Nevşehir is a city and the capital district of Nevşehir Province in the Central Anatolia Region of Turkey. According to the 2010 census, population of the district is 117,890 while the total is 282,337. The district covers an area of 535 square kilometers (207 square miles), and the town lies at an average elevation of 1,224 m (4,016 ft).

The city is located at a distance of 290 km (180 mi) from the capital Ankara, 727 km (450 mi) from Istanbul and is within the historical region of Cappadocia.

The traditional main sources of income of the city, carpet weaving and viticulture have been overtaken by tourism, due to its proximity to the underground shelters, the fairy chimneys, monasteries, caravanserais and the famous rock-hewn churches of Goreme.

The area is a popular tourist destination, as it has many areas with unique geological, historic, and cultural features. The most important towns and destinations in Cappadocia are Urgup, Goreme, Ihlara Valley, Selime, Guzelyurt, Uchisar, Avanos and Zelve. Among the underground cities worth seeing are Derinkuyu, Kaymakli, Gaziemir, and Ozkanak. The best historic mansions and cave houses for tourist stays are in Urgup, Goreme, Guzelyurt, and Uchisar.

Hot-air ballooning is very popular in Cappadocia and is available in Goreme. Trekking is enjoyed in Ihlara Valley, Monastery Valley (Guzelyurt), Urgup, and Goreme.
